Legends of…..

The Legends of …Concert Series serves as the signature fundraiser for The Auntie Karen Foundation.

Purpose: The contributions of African-Americans to the history of music in the United States began as early as the 1600s. Although it is not known exactly when jazz emerged, it is clear that this indigenous art form has had a tremendous impact in this country and the world. Unfortunately, jazz music, once known as America's classical music, has become a relic, replaced with the lucrative world of Rap, Rock and Hip Hop music.

The Auntie Karen Foundation created the Legends of..series to keep the legacy of African American music alive. Each year during Black History Month, The series will profile a jazz, rhythm and blues, gospel or blues artist who has made a lasting contribution to the history of music. The series will place a special emphasis on Jazz Legends.

The inaugural concert featured four time Grammy winner Roberta Flack at The Koger Center of the Arts in Columbia, SC on February 26, 2004.

The Legends of Concert Series was designed to expose SC residents to the works of legends from around the globe. Artist will perform when possible or have tributes made to the contributions of their work, if deceased.

The Auntie Karen Foundation creates and pilots a series of reproducible community outreach programs. The core programs benefit youth aged 3 through 22. The pilot programs include participants from area schools, churches, and community organizations. These programs are being documented so that other communities across the globe (South America and Africa) can duplicate them.
